China & USA Industry News Tidbits:

  • A recent survey of 335,000 children in the Wenzhou area of China, found that 60% have eye problems requiring corrective vision. In one class, 98% of the students needed glasses. This is of great concern to both teachers and parents as uncorrected visual needs can result in poor academic performance and long term developmental problems. Extensive computer use is thought to be the major contributing factor for the high numbers of children with visual impairments.
China has a new location for frame manufacturing. It is in the country side of Zhong Tong. Because of the growth of the optical industry in China, more and more areas for eyewear manufacturing are likely to appear. Eyecare Business Magazine recently published an article citing that 77 percent of the eyewear manufacturing worldwide is now taking place in China. As prices continue to rise due to increased materials cost and the implementation of new labor laws by the Chinese government, the growth of the optical industry into more interior areas of China is already starting. In these areas, frame production can be done for less money but still have the benefit of the infrastructure that has been built up in China over the last two decades.
  • Flea markets centering on eyeglass frames are thriving in large Chinese cities such as Beijing, Guang Zhou, Dan Yang, Gin Dao, Zhen Zhou and Yi Wu. These markets are a gathering place for designers who go to meet with friends and get ideas about trends and new technology. The markets are open from 8am to 8pm everyday and attract a large number of people from inland China, Russia, India and South America.
